Home Share Program |

In 1993, Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills identified a number of persons with developmental disabilities who needed support every day, but who did not need
the specialized supports which had to be concentrated in group homes. These persons could be happier and well supported in a family environment. The Home
Share Program was created, and now supports 26 individuals with a developmental disability who live with staff in the staff's home. Far beyond the
traditional "room and board" situation, the program's purpose is that the clients become part of the staff person's household, as family members.
Although individual contracts are renewed annually, staff are screened, interviewed and hired as full employees of Ottawa-Carleton Lifeskills Inc, with
the expectation of a long-term commitment. They receive salaries, benefits, training, support and supervision. The hiring process includes an
extensive "Home Study" to ensure suitability of the home and support from other members of the household. All adults in the home
must maintain a clear criminal reference check.
When all hiring requirements have been met, a matching process ensues.
